Decemberists - Valerie Plame

In the case of Branzenberg v. Hayes the Supreme Court ruled that reporters cannot refuse to speak before grand juries. They can be forced to reveal their sources. The Court said that the First Amendment was not intended to conceal the criminal conduct of sources. The article in question in this case concerned an in-depth journalistic artical about marijuana production.

Soon after this case, 49 states passed laws protecting the rights of reporters before grand juries in state courts. Unfortunately this still does not apply to Federal Courts, which of course made me think of Valerie Plame, and of this song.

This song is such an awesome intersection of my interests.

I think this column by Dana Milbank from the Washington Post is the best at describing a disfunction is in our political system (did someone say the republican party?).  My favorite part of it (and there are many great parts) is where John Boehner (R) (a really unfortunate name — get it, boner?) quotes from the ‘constitution’.

He told the crowd he would read from the Constitution, then read the “we hold these truths” bit from the Declaration of Independence.

These are the real americans.  Right?
